Introduction to Glass Fusing: 3 projects

Sunday 26th Jan 2020, The Base

Join Shirely Eccles for an introduction to the skills and techniques involved in glass fusing and slumping.

We will make three items during the day; glass jewellery fused in a microwave and two kiln-fired pieces; a bowl/platter and either coasters, a mirror frame or a wind chime. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of ideas and glass materials.

For project 1 we will be using a microwave to make fused glass jewellery pieces. You will be able to observe the transformation of glass and glass cutting techniques will be demonstrated. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of glass materials including frits, confetti, glass powders and even melting stringers over a flame.

In project 2 you can create either a small wall hanging, coasters, a mirror frame or a wind chime.

In project 3 you will learn techniques to design your own sheet of art glass. This will then be used to form a slumped bowl or platter. Suitable moulds will be discussed and prepared for this process as the technique will include two firings.

Projects 2 and 3 will be taken away for firing in a kiln and will be returned to The Base for you to collect after the course. If possible please bring note/ sketchbook, images and ideas, as well as dust mask, safety glasses and apron (If you have this available).

Duration: 11am - 5pm

Please note that we reserve the right to cancel any course or workshop if the minimum numbers are not met. If we are not able to run a workshop you will be informed three working days ahead of the course or workshop start date.
