Community Engagement Coordinator

This new exciting role will take The Base’s engagement work to the next level and is vital to building on the success of The Base’s learning and participation programme. You will be passionate about the benefits of arts engagement and able to share this enthusiasm with others, providing enriching and exciting arts experiences for everyone. You will plan an exciting and varied range of creative engagement activities with have a particular focus on working inclusively with young people both in and out of formal education.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To create, maintain and deliver a programme of visual arts projects for Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 – 4 that enhances creative learning in schools and supports teachers to deliver high quality arts provision.
  • To create links between The Base’s arts programme, professional exhibition programme and opportunities for schools (across all key stages) and youth settings.
  • To work with the Development Officer, and the wider Corn Exchange team, to identify and support funded projects which provide high quality creative learning and well-being opportunities to members of our community.
  • To lead and coordinate community engagement competitions which complement the exhibition programme, working with the Gallery & Events Co-ordinator to find opportunities for public displays.
  • To work proactively with the team to develop and increase participation and advocate for the work we do at all times.

The Base, Greenham, Newbury is seeking new Trustees to join its Board of Trustees.

The Base is a purpose-built visual arts and craft building. The venue comprises of an 110sqm gallery, artist studios and a workshop space for participatory classes.

It was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee in May 2019. In June 2022, it successfully applied to the Charity Commission to register as a charity.

Our Charitable Objective:
For the public benefit, to promote and advance the arts, in particular the art of visual arts and craft, by engaging people in a meaningful way that will enhance their lives through exhibitions and creative workshops, working with communities primarily based in West Berkshire and North Hampshire


The Base is a dedicated team of 7. It is managed by the Corn Exchange (Newbury) Trust and is supported with further expertise in curation, finance, HR, marketing and other fundamental activity to enable the organisation to operate more efficiently. Together they provide a holistic and rounded arts and cultural offer for West Berkshire.

To support the wonderful work the team here do, we are looking to recruit some new trustees to our Board and broaden the range of knowledge and perspectives as we look forwards and ambitiously plan for growth and sustainability into the next 5 years.

The current Board is made up of 4 Trustee Directors, including Chair of Trustees Alan Stark, and 1 Board observer from Greenham Trust, with whom The Base enjoys a strong relationship with as owners and landlords of the building and core funder of The Base activities.

We are seeking a diverse range of applications with a variety of experiences: previous experience as a Trustee is not necessary.

We welcome interest from people with particular expertise in the areas of: Arts, Programming or Community Engagement; Education; and Fundraising. We encourage applications from anyone who identifies with and is excited by the role description.

The Board will shortlist and appoint new Trustees based on expertise and experience, ensuring a balanced and relevant membership to take the Charity forward.

Volunteer Gallery Stewards

We are looking for warm and friendly individuals to join our Gallery Steward team at The Base Greenham!

In this volunteer role, you will welcome visitors to our Gallery and engage with them about the high-quality exhibitions on display. Checking-in visitors who have pre-booked tickets is an important part of this role, along with helping to keep the Gallery clean, tidy and ready for visitors. You will build up a knowledge of the artwork on display to enable you to answer visitor’s questions or requests for further information.

Hours: Steward shifts will be during the Gallery’s opening hours; typically, this is Wednesday to Sunday from 10am -5pm, and can be approximately 2 hours in length, but we are flexible to accommodate the needs of our volunteers.
